Electro-Acoustic Guitars
To buy a good electro-acoustic guitar is not as easy as to buy a standard acoustic one. Not only do you need to look into the quality and type of its wood, but also its built-in preamp and pickup, with which we can amplify our guitar.
Pickups
A pickup in an electro-acoustic guitar looks differently than in an electric guitar, and it’s called a piezoelectric pickup. It works similarly to a microphone, and that’s why when we amplify it we can hear some additional sounds besides the notes coming straight from the guitar. It’s hidden inside of the sound board and receives every sound, after that converts it and sends it to the preamp, and then through the cable to an amplifier. The preamp is very convenient and comfortable, seeing as you have all the sliders responsible for adjusting your low, middle and high tones, right at the access of your hand. There’s also a volume slider and very often a built-in tuner, with which we can tune our guitar in whatever settings we happen to play. It’s worth noting that to work with our preamp we need power in form of a battery.
Which electro-acoustic guitar is suitable for me?
We need to remember that an electro-acoustic guitar is always going to be more expensive than an acoustic guitar, seeing as it’s not only the quality of wood that counts, but there’s also a preamp and a pickup, which both should be of good quality as well. It doesn’t matter what kind of music will you prefer, cause after all clarity and quality of the sound is important in every genre. Choosing from cheaper models, Fender CD 60 CE is a good option. A combination of a spruce cover plate with mahogany on the back and the sides, guarantees a warm and melodious sound. Inside there’s electronics by Fishman, which is a company worth remembering, seeing as it’s the leader in this market. Another reliable model is LAG GLA-T77 DCE. The first thing we notice is probably the beautiful and intense dark-orange color of the instrument. Obviously it doesn’t affect the sound, but still, just after a while when you have in your hands, you can hear the warmth in the chords. The credit here goes to the usage of mahogany again, which the whole instrument is made of. An important aspect of Lag guitars is the comfort in playing, what definitely helps while learning to play. That model is equipped with electronics by DirectLag Plus, which are very sensitive to sounds of pulled strings or knock-like sounds on the soundboard. It’s a great choice for both, beginners, as well as more advanced players looking for a good quality instrument with original tone. When we’re about to buy an electro-acoustic guitar it’s worth to take interest in brands like Lag, Takamine, Fender, Epiphone, Dowina or Ovation, with that last one being hard to ignore, really. Quite recently we got a hold of Applause guitars, which are produced by Ovation – for example Applause AE-128 RRB with spruce cover plate and glass fiber back. It’s got a very distinctive sound and its other advantage is more sensitivity to the way we play, thanks to which we can adjust the volume of our songs just by plucking the strings lighter or heavier. That models is equipped with sensitive and detailed electronic by Ovation, so we’re dealing with some great quality here on top of everything.
Trivia
It’s nothing new that wood has got great acoustic qualities, but it’s also interesting that the older the guitar is, the better it sounds. It takes some commitment to take care of the instrument, most likely to conserve it in a good condition, but it pays off with its tone.
Summary
While buying an electro-acoustic guitar we need to pay attention to the wood, but also the electronics. The purchase should be well-thought, and it’s also good to have a chance to get the instrument tried out. What’s more, owners of acoustic guitars can upgrade them to electro-acoustic guitars in a different way as well – there’s a designed pickup for acoustic guitars, mounted on top of its sound hole. With a huge variety of different models, everyone should easily find what suits them best.
