Sometimes we can get to a point where we can start adjusting our ear to the pitch of for example a hi-hat, but it’s usually after many hours of work with that very same sound on a recording. A cowbell on the other hand, has got a fixed pitch of its sound when it’s isolated, but loses it in the mix. It’s impossible though to separate the basic tone of a snare drum, seeing as its sound comes with more complexities, being close to an effect called white noise.
